If you are a convicted felon and on probation is it illegal to attempt (try) to purchase a firearm? Is there something you can be charged with if you never receive or have a gun in your posession???

When you buy a firearm there is a form that you must fill out that asks if you are a convicted felon. If you say that you are not a felon when you are then you could be subject to a felony of making a false statement on a firearms form.
