Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Virginia

Is a demotion legal?

After an aboove average performance rating in January, I was recently told that my compensation was being lowered based upon financial situations the company was facing and not meeting performance goals. Is this legal when the scope of the role has not changed and no warning was offered?

Re: Is a demotion legal?

Yes, it is in the employment at will jurisidiction known as the Commonwealth of Virginia. Here employees work essentially at the sufferance of their employers, and, for the most part, have little legal recourse except for the

rights and protections offered under Title V11

federal anti-discrimination laws.

Therefore, if your particular job grievance does not fit under one these federally protected

categories, e.g, age, race, sex, etc., you're

essentially without a remedy, unless you're working under a contract which specifically provides for something more.
