Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Virginia

How to Determine Monetary Awards

OCR accepted my claim for sexual discrimination. The school board wants to go to mediation. I would like to know the law and what I can legally propose. I realize mediation doesn't mean a resolution, but I just don't know what I can claim.I resigned from my teaching job and assistant coach status on the day I found out I wasn't promoted/moved up to a vacant head coaching job. It was effective at the end of the school year. There are a number of factors and the school administrators know the solidness of my claim. Any guidelines on monetary awards for such actions?

All of the issues you have raised should be discussed with the attorney who, hopefully, is representing you in this matter.

Mediation is a good first step. You do know that you can now bring an action in a court of law for the acts complained of. You might have to get a right to sue letter from your OCR, you will have to check out the law in your area. Sexual harassment is a tort and allows for the recovery of general damages. Which means that you emotional pain and suffering can be compensated, as well as specific damages, which is you loss of income, pension, medical benefits, etc. Good luck!
