Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Virginia
fired because of age?
My grandmother retired from hospital after 31 years. She went back to work part-time for a hotel corp., in the laundry area. My mother worked there as well at the front desk of the hotel. My mother was fired from her job for a misunderstanding with the Manager after 6 months of employment. The manager told my grandmother to leave as well. My grandmother is 74 years of age. She has an excellent work/performance history with proven letters of recommendation. The Manager did not give a reason to my grandmother for firing her. The manager also tried to fight my grandmother's unemployment and was unsuccessful in the prevention of benefits to my grandmother. My grandmother has been unsuccessful in getting other employment. Does my grandmother have any legal grounds for age discrimination?

Unless your grandmother has specific evidence to
substaintiate her claim of age discrimination, under the scenario that you've described, I would say no.Virginia is a so-called "right to work"
jurisdiction where emmployers have wide latitude to fire employees with virtual impunity---as long as they stay clear of the federal anti-discrimination laws.

What other reason could he possibly cite as his reason for the termination. It certainly sounds wrongful to me.
