Virginia' DMV will get notice of the conviction. When that happens, they will send you a notice stating that your privilege to drive in Virginia is suspended for 12 months from the date of conviction.

In order to get a restricted license, you have to file a petition in the General District Court of the jurisdiction in which you reside. Upon proof of enrollment in ASAP and assuming you are otherwise eligible, the court will grant restricted driving privileges. In order to get your full license back at the end of the 12 months you have to remember to pay the reinstatement fee with DMV in addition to meeting all of the other requirements set forth in their notice.

You don't necessarily need an attorney to help you file and argue the petition in court but it is recommended.
