How to obtain power of attorney after family member is unable to sign...
My aunt recently suffered a massive stroke. She had only verbally stated that she wanted me to handle her affairs, upon illness or death and left me beneficiary of her life insurance, but never actually drafted a Power of Attorney or wrote anything, that I can find. She is now unable to speak and I need to obtain legal guardianship, if you will, to conduct her affairs, both medically and financially. I called Alexandria Court to find out how to obtain Power of Attorney and was told they do not get involved in those matters. What do I need to do to become her legal guardian and have the power to make any legal, medical or financial decision necessary for her well-being?

Assuming she is no longer mentally competent, you will need to file a Petition with the Court to be appointed her guardian.
