Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia
About 4 years ago I lost custody of my son to my mother, his grandmother. I was involved in drugs at the time however, i had left him with his paternal grandmother while I was going through this time in my life and until I could get back on my feet. During that time the maternal grandmother came and took custody away from me and the paternal grandmother. She took him out of state and away from all of his family. I have been clean now for three and a half years and I have been working very hard to get him back. However, she told me last week when I showed up at one of his school functions that I no longer had any parental rights to him that they were terminated when she was given physical custody. Please tell me if this is infact a true statement.

Very unlikely, but you should be able to verify any such claims by obtaining a copy of the court order which supposedly granted the maternal grandmother custody of this child and any related order which supposedly terminated your parental rights. (I virtually guarantee that you will not be able to find any evidence of the latter.)
You need to check court records to determine if any abuse and neglect cases were brought against you ....any emergency protective or removal orders. If so, were there any subsequent hearings. Were you noticed for court hearings and failed to appear. Check court records.
