Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Adopted Guatemalan Girl

A little over a year ago, my sister and her husband adopted a little girl from Guatemala. She is now 8 years old. They adopted her through an adoption agency in Florida. The problem is that she does not seem to have adjusted to life with them and vice versa. She has had trouble learning English and has been getting extra food from her school classmates. My sister feeds her well. In short, the situation at home is not a happy one.In Guatemala she was not always given proper food and her older sister used to beat her. I feel very sorry for her and my sister.

The little girl was adopted so that my 9 year old niece could have a sister to play with since my sister cannot have any more children. What can be done? The problem could be in part due to a clash of cultures.

Re: Adopted Guatemalan Girl

As far as I am aware, after a lawful adoption, the Court would effectively treat your sister's adopted child no differently than her biological child. She can take whatever actions any other parent might to address these issues.
