Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

I was adopted when I was eight weeks old or so my parents thought. When I went to get my drivers license at sixteen, we found that my adoption had never been finalized. This was the fault of the court. My parents did hire a lawyer and go to court for my adoption. I am now forty-two years ago and this has bothered me for some time. Is there something that we can do to prevent this from occurring to someone else and does the court have any liability?

What does the court have to say about it? (I would not expect there to be any liability chargeable to the court but the lawyer but have some answering to do for his/her apparent failure to follow through with your adoption.)
