After an Answer to the Complaint is filed what happens next?

Assuming the case is contested, it then enters what is called the pretrial discovery phase when each side may propound to the other a series of questions (interrogatories) and/or requests for documents that must be responded to within a designated time frame. Either side may also require the other to sit for a deposition where one party may be asked by the lawyer for the other a series of questions under oath regarding the case--all of which may be recorded by a court reporter and later utilized if the case proceeds to trial.
