Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Appealing Child Support

I just had a court date about 10 days ago and the judge order the father to pay the current amount of child support of $6,954.95 or 12 months in jail(he has to purge himself out), because it was his 2nd show cause and no payment had been made since 5/20/05 for $20.69, and that was the only payment for that year, and he had already had a previous show cause for non payment. Currently he is in jail. So now there is another court date, he has obviously appealed the ruling. Will the case be heard by a different judge using the same information, or is it a completely different case? Is it likely that the judge will make a diffent ruling or uphold the original judges ruling?
