Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

I have applied for costody of my grandchild. The parents have agreed to this. Someone told his GAL my husband did drugs. The GAL has now ordered a background check through Social Services. Can they do that? What are they looking for? The judge has ordered it to be done do I have to? What if I give him back to his parents? Can the do a background check on parents?

If the judge has ordered the background check, it must now be carried out unless you withdraw your petition for custody of this grandchild.
