Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia
Need An Attorney
My husband wants a divorce and wants to go by way of mediation but so far we are not getting anywhere w/ it. I have inquired about hiring an attorney but the cheapest I have found wants $3500 to start. Is there anwhere I can go to find lower costing assistance? Is there a website maybe that I can look through that might help me in this crisis? I am a house wife and have been for the duration of the marriage and do not have the money to hire one at that cost. Is there anwhere I can go for free legal assistance?
Thank you,

Re: Need An Attorney
My fee for an uncontested divorce either in Virginia or D.C. is a flat fee of $1000.00.
If the divorce is contested and requires settlement of issues either through mediation or litigation, my billing rate for time expended is $125.00 per hour with a retainer of $1500.00 required upfront.(10 hours)
Re: Need An Attorney
If you are in Northern Virginia contact the Legal Services of Northern Virginia at 703-246-4500 and see if you qualify for free legal assistance. If not, contact the bar association of your local county bar by calling directory assistance and ask if they can help you receive pro bono (without a fee) legal assistance. Otherwise, I am afraid that you may have a really difficult time because the retainer you mentioned is really fairly average for here in Northern Virginia. Good luck to you!

Your inquiry does not give any particulars on the issue. However, you seem to infer that you could not afford a lawyer at even half the quoted fee.
Most Counties in Va. have some kind of a legal aid service for people they regard as indigents.
Only a few lawyers out there are in a position to do much "pro bono" (no fee work) and I frankly am not one of them. You might ask the local Bar Assoc. if they know of any. Good luck.
