Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

My bro's wife is filing divorce w/ alimony and child support even though he is in critical conditon and will be disabled. The divorce is in va but he is new jersey hospital. What does my brother have to do avoid alimony and child support. he has 2 children and has 401k and 20grand cash and will be gone paying hospital bills and will be in debt in 100grand. he needs to do something to protect his rights.

How about hiring a Virginia attorney to represent him in the divorce "to protect his rights"(among other things).
