Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

my brother passed away didnt have anything of value or a will , what are steps to close his bank account ? he also had just recicved his income tax return in the mail and a few paycheck . he still had money in his accounts . what is my mom suppose to do to have access to these funds to help with the funeral expenses we have now incurred .(he was murdered) he was 32 .we dont know what to do.

A family member needs to apply to the local circuit court probate division to be appointed administrator of your brother's small estate. This person will then have the authority to access the funds in his bank accounts, cash his paychecks, and do whatever else is necessary

to wind up his financial affairs.
