Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Name Change

I know I am allowed to go back to my maiden name once the judge signs the papers, but is this a ''freebie'' name change? I use a different name (not maiden, not married) professionally and would like to have my name changed to that, but I didn't know if this could be done at the time of the divorce or if I have to go through the usual name change channels and pay the required fees.

Re: Name Change

I don't know that I would characterize it as a "freebie"(since you are probably paying a lawyer), but you are permitted to change your name---as part of the divorce proceedings, or separately---to any name you wish as long as it's not for an illegal purpose such as to defraud and/or mislead creditors.
