what will happen if the noncustodial parent wants custody during the deployment of a custodial parent?

If you have been an involved parent then your chances are very, very good, but if you've been out of the child(ren)'s lives and now suddenly want to become involved you have a tougher uphill battle, particuarly if someone who has been really involved (say a grandparent) wants to contest you having custody.
