Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

child support

I was divorced in 1999 and was ordered to pay child support for 2 children. When the oldest turned 18 I cut the support in half per divorce gegree. 9 months later I get a letter from the ex attorney saying I could not do that and now owe back support and will continue to pay the full amt. Is my divorce degree not worth the paper it is written on? Can they order me to continue to pay for a child that is almost 19?

Re: child support

In 1996 Virginia child support laws were changed to require the obligor(non-custodial parent)to pay support until his or her child graduates from high school or turns age 19, whichever

occurs first.

Furthermore, your situation in all likelihood requires that a motion be filed with the court of original jurisdiction to obtain the type of modification which you apparently ill-advisedly attempted to secure on your own without the approval of this court.
