Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Child Support

If both parents (divorced) have custody of one child, does this mean that neither parent pays support to the other? Even if one parents income is greater and one of the children has extraordinary medical bills.

Re: Child Support

Child support guidelines now in effect in all fifty states and the District of Columbia factor into their criteria for determining how much one or both parents should pay, the income of each parent as well as any extraordinary medical

expenses of the child(ren).

This means that rarely will a situation arise where each parent pays nothing to the other because each has one child. Most often in this situation, the system of calculation always recognizes that there is a disproportionate burden on one parent, and will therefore assess a support obligation against the other to help offset this.
