Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Child's name change

My daughter is 16 years old but continuously insists on having her name changed to my maiden name. She never had a relationship with her father and does not want his last name. Is this reason enough for a name change petition to be rewarded or what other reasons must I provide to get her name changed? I know she's almost 18 but it upsets her to have her father's last name.

Re: Child's name change

Your daughter's desire to change her name is sufficient basis for the petition. As she is a minor, her father must be given notice of the request, and an opportunity to object. It is up to the judge, however, to decide what is best for the child.
