if you know about a court date but do not get served to appear, are you still obligated to attend?

If you mean to ask whether you're required to attend a court hearing as a defendant in a case at issue when you've never been properly served with papers and notice of the case, the answer is no, you are not, irrespective of what knowledge you may have independently acquired of the matter.

The same would also apply to your appearance as a witness in such a case. If you haven't been properly served with a subpoena to appear as

a witness, you would also be under no obligation to appear, regardless of what you may know about the case.
