Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Custody

I went for custody of my great niece after finding her. She is 3 months old. Now all of a sudden My brother the childs grand father wants her. The court tells me that he has priority over me cause he is the maternal GP. If both our home studies come back fine he will win custody. He told me sitting in court he didn't want her that he's just doing this. What do I need to do to get custody of my niece? I can't afford an attorney.
