custody of non married couple

i was awarded custody of my daughter through a protection order in the state of md and now live in virginia.since the order has expired do i still have legal custody of my daughter now that i reside in virginia.we were never married and she has always been with me.should i file in virginia or is it a moot subject?

My opinion is that when custody is awarded pursuant to a Protective Order, it expires when the Order does. You do have to file for custody in Virginia, if the child has lived here at least six months.
