Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Custody

For the past 4 1/2 years, my son and his family have been living with us. Recently, my son passed away and his wife and children still live with us. She is and has not been working but is receiving Social Security. She is 22 yrs old and is now starting to disappear with the children for days at a time; giving us bogus phone numbers and addresses as to where she is. This last time she did this, the children arrived home filthy dirty and smelly, like they hadn't had a bath in weeks. Is there anything that we can do to obtain custody of our grandchildren? I am concerned for the welfare of my grandchildren!
