custody question

my friend is 18 yrs old in her last year of high school and has a 3 yr old daughter. she lives in VA and would like to know how she can get custody of her daughter back from her ex-boyfriend. She is currently trying to get into college. What are her chances for getting her daughter back?

Much more information would be needed

to reliably address this question but as the child's natural mother she should certainly have a solid basis to assert her claim for custody which will necessarily turn upon the many other factors which the court is legally obliged to consider in determining what is in this particular child's best interests.
