Can a divorce attorney "fire" the client? The case has not yet gone to court.

You need to look closely at the retainer agreement. Personally, my retainer says that either party may fire the other at any time. However, attorneys are bound by ethical rules when disassociating from a client. As your case has not advanced to court yet, a court would most likely allow the attorney to resign.
