Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia
Ok. In my divorce decree it states that my ex husband is liable and takes full responsibility for the car we both owned (both our names were on it mine being the secondary name) including any taxes, insurance, etc. Well now it's years later and he's moved away from Va and last year I purchased a van. It's now time to renew registration on it, but I can't because Chesterfield co has issued a stop due to unpaid personal property taxes owed on the vehicle my ex was responsible for and they're trying to make me pay it even though I have my divorce decree showing it's his bill. They told me it's a civil matter and I have to sue him for the money, so in the meantime I will have to pay the taxes until we get a court date. What happens when the judge orders him to pay and he doesn't? Will they issue a warrant for his arrest?

Yes, it's a civil matter which you should've pursued years ago when the defaulter was still in Virginia, and, no, civil matters do not normally result in warrants for arrest for noncompliance.
