I live here in va and he lives in MI i went to a lawyer to file for divorce he was served with papers he doesnt agree to the terms so it now is contested. i cant afford my lawyer and dont qualify for legal aid. can i go to the courthouse my self and file for a divorce the original lawyer told me i could i just need to know where and how to go about it. we have been seperated for 2yrs and i just got child support i also went down to file for custody. thank you for your time.

Yes, you can represent yourself(pro se)in a divorce action filed in the Commonwealth, but, if you're representing yourself, it should not be contested and should be upon a no-fault basis(and with the agreement of the out of state party to accept service of the papers and waive his or her right to further notice).
