How do I get a divorce?

I got married in August 1998.Separated end of 1998.Got married in Virginia,now I live in North Carolina.Found out online he may be in jail.I want a divorce.How do I do this?Do I have to have a lawyer?Do I have to go to Virginia or can I do it where I live now?I am clueless how to go about doing this.Please help me understand this process.

If you've lived in NC more than six months, then you can file for a simple divorce here in NC. I am assuming you have no child custody/support/equitable distribution issues. Go to your local courthouse's clerk's office and ask if they have a simple divorce kit. That is the easiest and fastest way; otherwise, consult an attorney in your town. Good luck.
