Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia
divorce
I married in Colombia, S.A. 18yrs ago, and I have been living here in the US for 17 of my married life. Do I loose any kind of benefits if I divorce outside the country, back in Colombia?

No, as long as the divorce is done there in Columbia in full conformance with the laws of that country.

It should be noted, nevertheless, that if you mean by "any kind of benefits", any marital assets or claims to such that you may have acquired during the course of your 17 year marriage and which are located here in the U.S., the answer, of course, must be that you could well jeopardize your rights to this marital property by divorcing in Columbia where the court would most likely be without proper jurisdiction to address these kinds of financial and property claims.
