Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

How To drop Assault and Battery charges

I've recently ended a live-in relationship and my ex-girlfriend has charged me with assault and battery after she stole my dog (a felony in Va) and I took the dog out of her car.

She has finally decided to enter into a recovery center for her addiction (the reason I ended the relationship) and has also decided to drop the charges.

The problem: She believes that by her not showing up in court, the charges will be dropped. I am wary of believing this. What should I do? I'm a single father, raising my 11 year old daughter on my own. A guilty charge will cost me my security clearance and my job.

The charges were filed with Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, not criminal.

Get a lawyer to represent you. Your girlfriend cannot drop the charges(that's up to the prosecutor's office),

but she is likely correct in her supposition that if she does not show up for the trial of the case as the Commonwealth's chief witness, that it will likely be dismissed.
