Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Last Name

I am due to have my first child soon and am not married to his father although we are together. I am thinking about naming him after his father and giving him his last name but have heard this could hurt me in court should we not work out and need to deal with child ustody and child support. Is that true? Is it better to give him my last name unitl if/when we get married?

Re: Last Name

No, your child's surname should have little effect(if any)on any court charged with deciding this child's best interests in terms of important issues such as custody or child support.
