Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

I am due in court on Nov. 23 with my ex-husband for child support & custody. I filed in late June & he filed on me Sept.10 (the day of our hearin thng) for custody stating "mom doesn't take care of the kids like she should." I have taken care of my kids for the last 10 months with no help from him. He has hired an attorney, but I can't afford to do so. Can i represent myself in court? If so, would i have the right to question him if i call him as a witness? Thank you for your time.

Yes, of course, you can represent yourself and at trial cross-exam the father or call him as your own witness in your case in chief, but since custody matters

are usually more complex than simple matters to legally construe, your

pro se or self representation will likely be more to your detriment than benefit.
