Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Ex-Husband's Obligations?

During my previous marriage, I co-

signed for a loan for my husbands

car, a used car that he bought from

and financed through a dealer. As

part of the divorce agreement, he

agreed to assume full responsibility

for paying off the car loan.

However, he since stopped making

payments, and the law firm

representing the finance company

has come after me. I explained to

them that my ex is now solely

responsible for the loan, but they said

they can't get hold of him (though

Im sure they know his social security

number and could track him down

via his drivers license). So they

decided to come after me. I was able

to find him (got a message to him

through his mother...he called me on

a throw-away cell phone). I

repeatedly tried to reason with

him, but he continually lied to me,

promised to make the payments, etc.

But he didnt follow through on his

promises, and the law firm eventually

threatened to attach my bank

account, unless I began to make

regular payments. So I began making

token payments each month. But

I'm nearly broke, and am

unemployed.

Do I have any legal options?

Re: Ex-Husband's Obligations?

About your only option, apparently, under these facts, would be to file a motion to reopen your divorce followed by a motion to show cause (as to why your former husband should not be found in contempt of court and appropriately sanctioned).
