Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia
Family/Domestic Law
My fiance & I are getting married and his mother is not invited. For very good reason. We believe she will try to ruin it and we are not sure what she is capable of doing to us. We have told her she is not invited but she told us she would come if she wanted to and we could not stop her. Can we get a restraining order against her or what can be done before the wedding rather than when she just shows up and possibly does something terrible to us? She has gotten in fist fights with people in the past. Never with us but we know she is capable of it. She also loves to make a sceen so that is a definate if she shows up. We don't know if she would attack us or merely just come to ruin our day. We can't say for sure, we just know she has threatened to come whether we want her there or not. The worry is that she will come and scream a fuss or rip my dress or who knows. The ceremony is outside so we worry that she could just run thru and do whatever she wants before anyone could get her to leave. Also, she loves to sue people so I am worried that we will be putting people in a bad position when they try to protect us from her. I hope you have some advice for us. Thank you! We live in VA, she lives in SC and the weddings in NC

Re: Family/Domestic Law
Perhaps, you need to consider changing the venue of the wedding to a place more secretive and one that your mother-in-law to be is less likely to
be able to find out about and therefore less likely to disrupt.
Re: Family/Domestic Law
As the wedding will be in NC, you really need to post this question there. In Virginia, assuming the outdoor wedding is on private property, one possibility would be to have the property owner serve her with a notice that she is not to trespass on the property. If she shows up, she could be arrested for trespasssing. A little hard, but effective.
Again, try posting this question as a NC question.
Good luck.
