Financial responsibility of one spouse to the other

Is a spouse legally responsible for the medical bills of a disabled spouse?

There is that possibility under Virginia law since such medical bills could be adjudged to be among the so-called "necessaries of life" for which a spouse could be held responsible if the disabled spouse was without resources to pay these bills.
