Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

My best friend has to go to court for child support. He just recently was released from jail for failure to pay and is just now getting onto his feet. He has managed to make some small payments. What are some possible senerios as to what will happen when he goes to court this time?

He could be further "cooling his heels", as they used to say in Mid-Twentieth Century America, in the local slammer if your friend cannot offer a credible and persuasive explanation to the judge as to why he hasn't yet cured his apparent default in his child support payments obligation.
