Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

a friend has signed uncontested divoce papers that were filed in va. hIs soon to be ex wife served him with papers and he signed them..since then it has been learned that she owes hew lawyers a balance and it looks like the divorce is being held up due to that balance. The papers have been filed in va courts and January 6 it will be 90 days. What is the due process, does she have to pay before the divorce can be fianlized? Can he pay the balance and the divorc e be done? If the balance is not paid what happens to the paperwork sitting in a courtroom? Whose responsible for the debt?
