Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

guardianship of child

I have a question, I am currently living overseas working for the government. I would like to send my daughter to live with my mother in Louisa Va and attend school there.

The schools here are substandard and my wife and I would prefer our daughter go to school in the States until we arrive there in 2010.

Is there any legal paperwork needed for my daughter to live with my mother and go to school? Does my mother need to be appointed ''Guardian'' in order to take care of her while we are overseas?

Thank you for your time.

Re: guardianship of child

Yes, your grandmother should petition the Louisa

County Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court to be appointed temporary guardian of your child for the desired time period. Once an order is granted by the court, this will allow the child to be enrolled in the schools of Louisa County and give the grandmother authority to approve medical treatment for the child as well as other authority that may be needed.

You and your wife may need to execute an affidavit

of some sort, but the court should be able to advise the grandmother as to exactly what papers may be required.
