legal custody
I live in the state of VA and have sole legal custody of my son. Do I need to file for physical custody as well? Or since I have sole legal custody does that mean I have complete custody of him.

Yes, very likely, although it's not entirely clear from your question as to how you came to believe that you have this status of sole legal custodian of your son.
