Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Legal Responsibilities

There is a possibility that my girlfriend may have breast cancer, the test results are not back as of now.

She has told me that if she does, she will not go through chemo or radiation treatments. Her decision is based upon her age (58), and what she has seen others go through with this treatment.

She, too, has told me that she wants for us to get married. However, I am retiring soon, and I cannot afford the medical bills that may incur from her illness. We have not discussed getting married as much as we have discussed her possible condition.

My question is; if we were to get married under these circumstances, will I be responsible for the medical bills that may incur from her illness, and God forbid her death?

Re: Legal Responsibilities

Virginia does have the "Doctrine of Necessaries" which provides that a spouse can be held liable for those bills used to keep the other spouse alive, i.e. serious medical treatment.
