What do you have to do in order to be legally seperated in the state of Va.?

You merely live "separate and apart" from your spouse with no intervening cohabitation. As a practical(as well as legal) matter, this normally means separate residences for the spouses.

Virginia does not formally recognize a status known as "legal separation".
