can he live with his married mistress after separation? how do I protect my child from this during visitation?

Yes, if he and his mistress don't mind violating Virginia criminal statutes

against fornication (Va. Code Sec. 18.2-344) and lewd and lascivious cohabitation (Va. Code Sec. 18.2-345).

As for protecting your child from exposure regarding the above, you would need

to have reasonable language incorporated into the order governing the father's visitation that would satisfy you on this issue without seriously impeding the father's right to visitation with his son.
