Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

I live in VA and I found out some years ago that I have a child with my ex-girlfriend. She married someone else and gave the child his last name and that man signed the birth certificate. Now they are separated but, not divorced. During that time I was ordered to take a paternity test and it was found that I am the child's father. She is bipolar (medically documented) and has been wrecking havoc in my life. I just got out of jail (2 and 1/2 years) and I am trying to get my life together. Please let me know how I can go about giving up parental rights in the state of VA and how this situation effects child support? Thank you.

You should consult an attorney asap and see whether there are other court orders against you. Good luck.

Only a Virginia court of proper jurisdiction(most likely the one that ordered

you to take the paternity test) would be empowered to terminate whatever

your parental rights may be in the situation described (and simultaneously

your obligations connected with such rights, including your obligation

to pay child support).

Yes, I would concur in what attorney Moseley has recommended.
