how long do I have to be separated in the state of virginia before filing for divorce with kids under 18

One year, if you're filing on no-fault grounds. You have to have grounds for divorce before you file. If you are claiming adultery, cruelty or desertion, the suit can be filed before a year, but the divorce will not be final until after a year.
