Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Marital property

My soon to be ex-husband purchased a new car without my knowledge. We recently separated and the purchase was made after the separation. We have not signed any divorce papers. Can I be held liable for the car? Will he try to make me pay for half the financing when the car is in his name? and am I entitled to part ownership and value of the new car? as part of the divorce proceedings?

Re: Marital property

Property acquired after the separation is not marital property, unless it was acquired with the proceeds of sale of marital property. If not, you would have no ownership interest in the new car and no obligation on the debt.

Yes, you could be responsible for his debts. You should consult an attorney asap. Good luck.
