Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia
Marriage Name change after 20 years
I know that when one gets married, if you want to change your name to match your spouse, you don't need to go to court to do so. Is there a time limit on that?
20+ years ago, my bride wanted to keep her maiden name - she was known professionally by that name, she didn't want to lose that identity, etc - and I was okay with that, so we did nothing. But now, with the kids in school and such, she's felt like she wants to change it to match me and the kids (she actually uses my name personally in these situations). It's hard to tell in my searchs on this topic what she would need to do - everything assumes you are just now getting married.
So, any ideas? I think it's going to be a huge hassle getting stuff switched AFTER whatever legal stuff takes place, but she's really interested in this, and the experience of 20+ years together tells me I should do what she wants.
Thanks.

Have her go to the office of the Clerk of your local Circuit Court; the Clerk will likely have forms for her to fill out to change her name. The process is simple and inexpensive.
