I am married and want to change my lastname. My wife wants to assume my new lastname. Will she need to file a court order also? We live in VA

Yes, separate "Petitions for a Name Change" (to be on the safe side) filed with the clerk of the circuit court in the city or county where you currently reside. (The clerk may decide to consolidate them as one or at least docket them

to be heard together on the same day.)
