Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

I am currently married with 4 children. We are still living in the same household. I need to take the first steps to eventually divorce. My concern is what to do first. He has threatened to file for custody and told me that I could leave the house. We have been married since 99. The house and car are in his name but I dont think that would ultimately matter since both were purchased since 99 and VA is a commonwealth. Do I file for custody and then figure out the separation? Do I take the kids and leave and then file for divorce? In Va do I have to be legally separated or can we jsut live apart? What are the first steps?
