Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Married or not????

I was married in 1976 in Washington, DC. Find out later that he was still married. We stayed together 4 years he still never divorced. Although he was supposed to. So we separated. He later married again but he eventual divorce his first wife to marry his present wife. His lawyer told him he did not have to divorce or get an annulment from me because since he was still married when we married that makes our marriage void. He got the divorce in California. I never thought about it but now I want to remarry and wondering can I? Am I still married or not? He's been married to his present spouse for over 20 years now. I presently live in Virginia.
